Photo and description

In the central part of the Greek island of Lesvos, about 40 km from Mytilene, in a picturesque fertile valley, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, is the cozy town of Kalloni. Even in the Middle Ages, largely due to its convenient geographical position and fertile lands, the city flourished, but today it is the second largest commercial center of the island. Kalloni's economy is mainly based on income from agriculture, actively developing tourism and, of course, fishing - "Kalloni sardines" are known far beyond the island of Lesvos.

Just three kilometers from Kaloni on the coast of the same name The bay is home to the city port and the Skala Kalloni beach center. This is one of the best and most popular resorts on the island with a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Kalloni Rock is especially popular with fans of windsurfing. In July, Skala Kalloni hosts the famous “Sardine Festival” where you can fully enjoy the delicious grilled sardines, which are of course served here with traditional Greek ouzo.

The Kalloni Bay wetlands are important ecosystem of the island and is famous for its rich flora and fauna, of great interest to scientists. After leaving the Academy of Plato, the famous ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle and his friend and student Theophrastus spent several years in the Calloni Lagoon studying the life of its inhabitants. These observations formed the basis of the first of the now known treatises on biology and subsequently entered the so-called "Aristotelian corpus". In spring and autumn, many migratory birds nest here, including quite rare species, attracting many bird watchers to this region.

Among the sights of Kalloni and its surroundings, it is worth noting the ruins of an old medieval castle and ancient sanctuaries, a small picturesque village Agia Paraskevi and located just 14 km north-west of Kalloni, the monastery of Saint Ignatius (Limonos Monastery) is one of the most important religious centers of the island of Lesvos.
