One of the main attractions of the city of Donetsk is the botanical garden, which is located on the Makeevskoe highway, along the Bohodukhovskaya beam. This picturesque corner, due to its area - 262.2 hectares, ranks first in Europe.

The city's botanical garden was founded in June 1964 as a research institute for the study of applied and fundamental problems of biology of the South-East Ukraine. In 1983, this majestic garden received the status of a monument and a botanical garden of national importance. A year later, he was awarded the UN Silver Medal for his work on nature conservation. In December 2001, the garden's plant collections were awarded the status of "National Heritage of Ukraine".

One of the most important results of the work of this garden is the creation of collections of plants in protected and open ground, which demonstrate the diversity of the flora of different regions of the world.

More than 5 thousand species of exotic plants grow on the territory of the botanical garden, and under glass there is as much as 1200 sq. m of area that allows you to organize 5 greenhouses with exotic plants and simulate all conditions of the tropics and subtropics for them.

The collection of the botanical garden includes about 70 species of plants protected at the international level, up to 90 species that are protected at the regional level, and also there are 97 species of plants listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Thanks to such a rich collection, the garden blooms from early spring to late autumn.

According to its structure, the botanical garden is divided into 4 sections, where different research groups work. This is a department of dendrology and floriculture, a department of flora, a department for the mobilization of various plant resources and a department of industrial botany.

Despite all the environmental difficulties of Donbass, thanks to such a large green treasure as a botanical garden, Donetsk is considered one of the well-greened industrial cities Ukraine.

The Donetsk Botanical Garden is open to its visitors from May to November, and for lovers of tropical and subtropical plants, excursions are held here all year round.
