Photo and description

The main historical sights of Tangier are located in the old part of the city - Medina. And at its highest point is the snow-white palace Dar el-Makzen. The building of the palace was built in the 17th century. and once belonged to the sultan. Richly decorated with mosaics and various decorative elements, the palace was made in the traditional Arabian style. It is a palace complex with galleries and a courtyard patio.

Only two sultans of Morocco lived in the Dar-el-Makzen palace, later the palace was used as the residence of Tangier's pasha. The halls of the palace make a striking impression: the walls and floors are covered with bright mosaics, the wooden ceilings are decorated with oriental wood carvings and colored paintings. In 1922 the palace was restored and transformed into a museum. The beautiful rooms, which are museum pieces in themselves, have been transformed into museum halls. Today, the Dar el-Makzen Palace houses two museums - the Museum of Archeology and the Museum of Moroccan Art.

The Museum of Art houses exhibits that represent the decorative and applied art of the Moroccan people. It is here that you can see a rich collection of world famous Rabat carpets. No less striking with its magnificence and luxury is the collection of women's jewelry, from which it is impossible to take your eyes off. These are beautiful belts, openwork tiaras, exquisite earrings and bracelets made of gilded silver and gold, inlaid with precious stones in the traditional Spanish-Moorish style. The authors of these jewelry works are masters from Essaouira.

The palace also houses the Museum of Archeology, which contains artifacts dating from prehistoric times to the first century AD, telling about the ancient history of Morocco. Here you can see a Carthaginian tomb and a Roman mosaic called “The Voyage of Venus.”

One of the paths of the Dar el-Makzen Palace leads to the amazing Mendoubia gardens, where beautiful centuries-old trees grow.
