Photo and description

The Transfiguration Cathedral is an Orthodox cathedral located in the city of Donetsk and built in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is the main temple of both Donetsk and Mariupol dioceses of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The temple was built at the end of the 20th century, following the model of the church of the same name, which was destroyed in 1933.

In the fall of 1883, in Yuzovka (now Donetsk), the construction of a stone church was begun on the site of a wooden church. In November 1886, the consecration of the temple took place. In 1896, a Fraternal School was founded in Yuzovka thanks to the church brotherhood of the Transfiguration Church.

In December 1930, the Holy Transfiguration Church lost its bells, and a little later the bell tower of the church was destroyed. And in 1931 the temple was blown up, ostensibly for the extraction of building materials - the temple was completely destroyed.

In February 1992, the Donetsk city council decided to allocate a land plot for the construction of a cathedral on the site of an old cemetery. The place where the cathedral was built did not coincide with the old one and the cathedral itself was built in a completely different form than before it was destroyed.

The construction of the temple began in 1997, and the official opening of the temple for all believers took place in 2006. The main architect of the construction was VV Anufrienko. The project was organized by the State Enterprise “Donbassgrazhdanproekt”, and the general contractor was the “Donetskmetallurgstroy” trust. The lower church of Sergius of Radonezh was painted by honored artists of Ukraine G. Zhukov and V. Telichko.

In 2002, at the entrance to the cathedral, a bronze statue of the Archangel Michael was installed, which was donated to the temple by the Kiev authorities. A little earlier, this statue stood on Independence Square in the city of Kiev.
