Photo & Description

The Scottish Writers Museum is located in Edinburgh. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to three famous writers and poets of Scotland: Robert Burns (1759-1796) Walter Scott (1771-1832) and Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). Temporary exhibitions and exhibitions tell about other writers and literary movements.

The museum is located in the old mansion of Lady Stear House, built in 1622 and named after the Dowager Countess Steer, who owned it in the 18th century. The mansion was donated to the city in 1907.

The museum tells about the life and work of three prominent figures of Scottish literature: Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Here are collected their personal belongings, manuscripts, first and rare editions. Visitors can see the printing press, which printed the first novel by Walter Scott "Waverly", his baby rocking horse; portraits and manuscripts by Robert Burns; a fishing rod and pipe that belonged to Stevenson. Curiosities brought by Stevenson from his travels are also exhibited here. Also among Stevenson's belongings is a cabinet made by furniture maker Brodie, who led a double life, was a burglar and was eventually hanged for his crimes. It is believed to have served as the inspiration for The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Even if you are new to the work of these writers, you will still be interested to hear the exciting stories told by the museum's guides.
