Photo and description

The Monument to the Heroes of Eltigen "Parus" is located in the quiet and cozy resort village of Heroevka (formerly Eltigen), located at the southernmost point of the Kerch Bay.

The monument was opened on May 8, 1985. The author of the concept of the monument was the sculptor and architect L. V. Tazba. The central part of the monument is the plastic composition "Sail". The monument is 20 meters high and weighs 2 thousand tons, made of reinforced concrete on Portland cement.

The small village of Eltigen became known throughout the Soviet Union in November 1943 thanks to the feat of courageous Soviet soldiers who initiated the liberation of Crimea. During the Kerch-Feodosiya operation on the night of November 1, 1943, near the Crimean village of Eltigen, an amphibious assault landed, who took possession of a small bridgehead on the shore, which went down in the history of the Great Patriotic War under the name "Tierra del Fuego". It was indeed a "land of fire": a small landing area was shot through and through. But despite this, the Eltigens, buried in the ground, held out for almost forty days, repelling several attacks per day. The warriors pulled back almost all enemy forces, thereby facilitating the landing of the main landing forces. They were supported by fighters on boats, who often made their way from the Taman coast through the wall of artillery fire, heavy artillery located on the other side of the strait, and pilots from the female 46th regiment of night bombers.

By order of the command, at night 7 December 1943, all who could move - more than 1.5 thousand courageous paratroopers, went to the breakthrough. Having defeated the enemy ring, the fighters reached Kerch and, having inflicted an unexpected blow from the rear on the German invaders, reached Mithridates and the adjacent streets. For another four whole days, battles were fought behind enemy lines.

Today, the monument to the Heroes of Eltigen is under the care of the Kerch City Council and requires major repairs.
