Photo and description

Located near the small but world famous village of Khajuraho, the Chaturbui Temple was built in honor of the Hindu god Vishnu. This ancient temple, which, according to scientists, was created around 1100, is also known as Jatakari, after the name of the village in which it is located. The word "Chaturbui" from Sanskrit translates as "one who has four arms" (meaning Vishnu, who has four arms).

The Chaturbui Temple is located three kilometers south of Khajuraho and therefore belongs to the southern group the famous temple complex of this city. Remarkably, Chaturbui is the only building in the complex that is completely devoid of any sculptures and images of an erotic and tantric nature. But this does not prevent him from being as popular, like the rest of the temples of Khajuraho.

The temple stands on a high stone platform and, as it should be for buildings of this type, consists of several parts: a mandapa - a long outer pavilion-corridor decorated with a colonnade, as well as a large hall in which the largest shrine of the temple is located - the statue of the four-armed Vishnu, which is carved from stone and has a height of more than 2.5 meters. In the two left hands of the idol are a lotus and a conchshell, the upper right hand is folded in a gesture expressing fearlessness, while the lower one in a gesture of blessing. Unfortunately, the lower arm was broken off some time ago. In addition, there are also other statues of Vishnu in the hall, depicting various of his essences, such as, for example, the statue of his avatar Narsimha - half-man-half-lion.
