The National Philharmonic named after Sergei Lunkevich is the center of the cultural life of Moldova, the largest concert organization operating in Chisinau.

The history of the creation of the National Philharmonic began back in 1940, when, in order to popularize musical creativity in Chisinau, the Moldavian State Philharmonic Society was created, on the basis of which diverse groups worked - symphonic, pop music, choreographic ensembles. The most famous among them are the Doina Academic Choir, the Play Ensemble, the Zhok Folk Dance Ensemble and others. At one time in the Philharmonic began their creative activity musicians who won world fame - Timofey Gurtovoy, Boris Milyutin, Dmitry Goya, Sergey Lunkevich.

In 1960, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out in the building of the Philharmonic under the leadership of the architect V. Voitsekhovsky, as a result of which not only the interior decoration, but also the exterior was transformed - the main entrance was decorated with a six-column portico, which gave the building a monumentality and a certain solemnity. The Big and Small concert halls were also renovated, the Organ Hall was reconstructed.

During this period, the philharmonic bands are constantly touring both in Moldova and in foreign countries. Under the auspices of the Philharmonic, tours of foreign art groups are organized, active scientific and educational work is carried out. The number of concerts per year reaches four thousand.

In 2003, the Moldavian Philharmonic was named after Sergei Lunkevich.

Today, the Philharmonic conducts an active concert and educational activity - numerous concerts of academic, jazz, pop and folk music are organized with the participation of Moldovan and foreign performers, groups, annual festivals are held, such as "Days of New Music", "Piano Nights ", The international festival" Beethovenissimo "and others.
