Photo and description

The Carmelite Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the resort town of Bordighera was built around 1790 at the initiative of the then ruler of the city, Giacomo Maria Garibaldi. Interested in meeting the expectations of the residents of Bordighera's new neighborhood, Borgo Marina, he wanted to use part of his ancestors' land property, namely Piazza Mazzini, to build a small church. This would be convenient for the inhabitants of the new area, as otherwise they would have to hold services and celebrate religious holidays in a more distant church in the old part of the city. A new small church was dedicated to the Barefoot Brothers Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Carmelite.

The main facade of the building, facing the Piazza Mazzini, decorated with a frieze with stucco floral motifs, which frames the symbol of the Mother of God and above which you can see a rose window with colored glass. Above this window is a plasterboard block with the words "D & Eacute; COR CARMELI", and the upper part of the frieze is notable for two small windows and a central small sanctuary with a bell topped with a cross. The lower part of the facade has preserved the original wooden portal with two shutters.

Inside the Carmelite church, although the vaulted ceiling has been replaced with a regular one, it feels like a well-organized space. The interior is decorated with decorations, stucco and valuable paintings. On the slate-gray floor you can see the headstones of numerous representatives of the Garibaldi family. Above the main altar, in a large niche, rests the statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child, and on either side of it are plaster statues of Saints Joseph and Erasmus. On the side walls of the presbytery you can see two oil paintings depicting John the Baptist and St. Francis. Smaller paintings adorn the walls of the main hall.

In 1996, the Carmelite Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was recognized as a "monument of special significance."
