Photo and description

There are hundreds of waterfalls on the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia. At the same time, a special place among them is occupied by the Gega waterfall (popularly known as the Circassian waterfall). This is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Abkhazia. The waterfall is located in the north of the Gagra ridge, in the valley of the Gega River, after which it got its name. The height of the waterfall reaches 70 m.

This waterfall was formed by the overflow of a river stream that flowed in the depths of a karst cave. The Gega River, which has a length of 25 km, is considered one of the largest tributaries of the Bzyb River. It flows along a rather narrow and very picturesque gorge, forming a huge number of waterfalls and rapids. In one such section, the river seems to be hiding in a crevice. Passing through underground corridors and grottoes, she sharply falls down, like cutting through a rock. This is the amazing Gega waterfall.

This amazing sight looks even more impressive in the sun. Splashes of water streaming over the dark shiny surface form a fantastic rainbow and a beautiful fountain at the foot. It is constantly fresh and cool enough, as the water at the exit from the Karst Cave becomes simply icy. The total length of the Karst Cave, through which the Gega waterfall passes, is 315 km. The foot of the mountain, from where the water mass falls, is almost always covered with snow. Therefore, when going on an excursion to the waterfall, it would be wise to bring warm clothes with you.

The waterfall in Gagra is a huge success among tourists, as some scenes were shot here for the Soviet film "Sherlock Holmes"
