Photo and description

The Church of St. George the Victorious is located in the city of Chelyabinsk in the Metallurgical District and is a true landmark not only of the region, but of the entire city.

In 1997, the administration of the Metallurgical District decided to build a church in the name of St. George the Victorious on the site of the dilapidated Metallurg cinema. The main sponsor of the construction was one of the largest enterprises in the region - Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant LLC. Construction work began with the demolition of the old cinema.

In April 1998, the foundation stone of the temple and the cross were consecrated. However, due to a lack of funds, construction was suspended. For five whole years, a lonely foundation stood instead of the planned church. Construction resumed only in July 2003 with funds allocated by ChMK and other enterprises and entrepreneurs of the city. Ordinary residents of the area also took a direct part in the construction of the church.

During the construction of the temple, services were held in the former building of a vocational school, located near the temple on Zhukova Street.

In 2009, the main work was completed, and in August of the same year the church was consecrated with a small order. The great consecration of the temple took place in April 2010. The author of the project of the St. George Church was the local architect V.A. Kvach.

The Church of St. George the Victorious is one of the largest churches in the city of Chelyabinsk. It is designed for 500 parishioners. But despite this size, the temple is single-altar. There are no columns inside the church which could negatively affect the acoustics of the room. Particular attention is drawn to the rich 4-tier iconostasis, the height of which is 11.5 m. Omsk craftsmen worked on the creation of the iconostasis, skillfully decorating it with gold leaf.

There are 11 bells on the church bell tower. The weight of the largest of them is 3 tons 300 kg. The bells adorn the icons of Saints George the Victorious, Saint Sergius of Radonezh, Saint Natalia Martyr, Saint Nicholas and Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir.
