Photo and description

The famous Dzhanbulat bastion is part of a fortified wall that was built by the Venetians at the beginning of the 15th century and completely surrounds the old part of the city of Famagusta.

During the period when this territory was under the control of the Venetians, the bastion was simply called the Arsenal, but later the fortress was named after the Turkish bey and warrior-hero named Janbulat (also known as Kanbulat), who played a significant role when the Ottomans conquered the territory of Cyprus. He especially distinguished himself in the capture of the city of Nicosia. Also, according to legend, in the battle of 1571 during the siege of Famagusta, Janbulat sacrificed his life so that the Ottoman army could capture this easternmost bastion of the city wall. After taking the fortress, the Turks buried the remains of their hero on its territory. And it is the Janbulat tomb that is considered the main attraction of this historical place. It is located in one of the many corridors of the structure. According to the existing legend, the fruits of a fig tree that grew next to this man's grave help women who cannot have children to have a child. Therefore, this place is very popular among the fair sex. In general, the fortress is one of the most visited sights of the city.

In 1968, the Kanbulat bastion was turned into a museum, where you can learn more about the history of Cyprus during the Ottoman rule - ancient costumes and military uniforms, weapons , ceramics and more.
