Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Mausoleum of Sidi Mahrez. Photo and descriptionThe Sidi Mahrez Mausoleum is the burial place of Abu Mohammed Mahrez es-Sadiki, one of the main Islamic patron saints of Tunisia. It was he who, at the beginning of the 19th century, having arrived from the city of Aryana (northern Tunisia), gathered the townspeople in the main square and inspired them with his speeches so that all the men of the city, not relying on the state, would restore at least some of the ancient architectural monuments destroyed during numerous wars with neighboring countries, and mainly with Turkey, dominating the territory of Tunisia at this time. After the death of the preacher in 1862, grateful residents of the city built this mausoleum. The mausoleum is located in the Al-Hafsiyah district in the north of the main and oldest square of the city. The building of the mausoleum of Sidi Mahrez has a restrained appearance, which is typical for the eastern burial structures of the Ottoman style. The special feature of this building is its nine towering domes. Above the main building is a large white dome, on either side of it there are four smaller ones and four more on the edges of the mausoleum's roof. An ornate prayer hall and a small green garden are attached to the mosque. The tomb was built in the Islamic style and decorated with ligatures and paintings inside, which in turn gives a special grandeur to the building. Outside, the mausoleum is painted white - the color of purity and true faith. Opposite the tomb is the Sidi Mahrez Mosque, also built in honor of Abu Mohammed.
