Photo and description

A chapel-monument to the soldiers-internationalists who died in Afghanistan, is installed in the city of Polotsk in a quiet peaceful park on Francisk Skaryna Avenue.

More than 300 young people of Polotsk residents fought in Afghanistan. 28 of them died, 32 were injured and became disabled, the rest received irreparable psychological wounds, which the war leaves in the souls of those who participated in it.

The inhabitants of ancient Polotsk do not forget their heroes. At the expense of the relatives of the victims, at the expense of those who were lucky to return from the war, this modest red brick chapel was built in 2004. It was consecrated on October 14, 2004.

On the walls of the chapel there are plaques with the names of Christian soldiers engraved on them, who fought in a foreign land for a foreign people. The names of those who suffered in this brutal war are stamped out.

It is no coincidence that the chapel was erected near the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. The chapel is under the shadow of the temple, just as the souls of the dead are now under the patronage of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Relatives of those who died come here. Guys who survived come here. Tourists also come to admire the austere beauty of this red chapel. According to a good tradition, the newlyweds come on their wedding day to lay flowers in memory of their death far from their hometown.

The chapel hosts solemn events, honoring veterans who tell the younger generation about what war is.
