"Royal Lake" Kandawgi, and this is how its name is translated, is one of the two large lakes of Yangon. It is located east of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Lake Kandawgi is an artificial body of water that is piped from Lake Inya, located in northern Yangon, just in the path of water flowing to Yangon during the monsoons. Lake Kandavgi was founded by British colonists to provide the townspeople with clean water. The lake was designed by engineer Matthew in the 1870s. On the site of the present lake there used to be swamps and several smaller reservoirs. The swamps were drained, the lakes were united into one, and a dam appeared on the southern side. From the lake, through specially created channels, water entered reservoirs in different areas of Yangon, from where all the inhabitants could draw water. Unfortunately, this project has not justified itself. Water was still scarce, so on the northern tip of Yangon, where there used to be a rainforest, it was decided to create another lake called Victoria, which we now know as Lake Inya.

The length of the coastline of Lake Kandawgi is about 8 km. Its depth varies from 50 to 115 cm. A large landscape park Kandawgi and Yangon Zoo, where you can also find an aquarium and an amusement park, go to the lake with an area of 61 hectares.

Karawijk is installed on the east shore a replica of the Burmese royal boat, which was made of concrete in 1972. It houses a self-service restaurant.
