Photo and description

The Queensland Museum is the main state museum, whose collections are located on 4 campuses: in South Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Townsville.

The Museum was founded on January 20, 1862 years by the Queensland Philosophical Society, led by Charles Coxen. Throughout its history, the museum has moved more than once - its expositions in different years were located in the building of the Old Windmill (from 1862 to 1869), in the Parliament building (until 1873), in the main post office (until 1879).

In 1879, the state government built a building for the museum on William Street, where the museum moved for the next 20 years. In 1899, the Queensland Museum moved again - this time to the Exhibition Hall (today it is called the Old Museum) in the Bowen Hills suburb of Brisbane, where it had been located for 87 years. In 1986, the Museum moved to the Queensland Cultural Center on the South Bank and is located adjacent to the Queensland Art Gallery.

Today, the Queensland Museum has several thematic sites:

The South Bank Museum is located near South Bank Park in the cultural heart of Brisbane. This is the largest and oldest campus where you can get acquainted with the history of Queensland, its past, present and future. Popular expositions include the ENERGEX playground, the Help Center and the exotic Dandiiri Maiwar, a place where you can learn about the life of aboriginal tribes, see with your own eyes objects of their culture, traditions and beliefs.

The Science Center is designed to demonstrate advances in science and technology in our daily life.

The Railway Museum features over 15 exhibits that show how the construction of the railway had a tremendous impact on the development and life of Queensland. In 2011, the museum set a new world record by constructing the longest playable railway, which was entered in the Guinness Book of Records.

The Cobb + Co Museum is located in Toowoomba. It was built in 1987 when the Queensland Museum needed more space to accommodate horse carriage models. Today the museum's collection contains a huge variety of vehicles, from horse-drawn carriages and carts to so-called "landau" - convertible cars. The museum regularly hosts all kinds of master classes: hand forging, silverwork, leather goods, etc.

Queensland Tropical Museum: the main attraction is the exhibition of the British warship Pandora, which sank off Cape York in 1791. Hundreds of amazing artifacts were recovered from the crash site and are available to visitors today. In other halls of the museum you can get acquainted with the inhabitants of the tropical rain forest, corals and inhabitants of the deep sea.
