Photo and description

The Livorno embankment is a favorite place for walking among residents and visitors of the city. Many attractions are concentrated here, which you can get to know by going on foot or by bike (there is a special path for this).

Orlando shipyards are located at the very beginning of the embankment. They were founded in 1866 by Luigi Orlando and have played an important role in the economy of Livorno for many decades. Today the entire territory of the shipyards is under reconstruction.

To the south of them is the Scoglio della Regina, literally - the Royal Rock, - the baths of the 19th century, which were under the patronage of Queen Maria Louise of Bourbon, after whom they are named. The baths are located on a small island connected to the coast by a bridge. Plans for their restoration are being developed today.

Viale Italia stretches along the waterfront, framed by palm trees and offering tourists numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. Joggers, walkers and cyclists love to walk along this street.

One of the main attractions of the promenade is Terrazza Mascagni, which offers a wonderful view of the sea. In the center of the terrace there is a recently restored gazebo, built in 1935. It is from here that the Palio Marinaro boat race starts every year on the first Sunday in July, and in good weather, you can see the outlines of the Gorgona and Elba islands from the terrace.

At the northern tip of Terrazza Mascagni is the third largest aquarium in Italy, and opposite the terrace is one of the oldest hotels in Livorno - Hotel Palazzo. At the end of the 19th century, this huge building was the most elegant and exclusive hotel in the city. The hotel was closed for many years, but in 2008 it again opened its doors to tourists - today it is the only five-star hotel in Livorno.

Just behind Terrazza Mascagni you can find the oldest baths in the city - Pankaldi, which are still very popular with the locals. They were opened in 1846. A little further is the Piazza San Jacopo in Aquaviva with a bronze statue of Benedetto Brin, the founder of the naval school. To the right is the Church of San Jacopo, and next to it is the building of the same naval school, opened in 1881. This school is still considered one of the largest in Italy.
