Photo and description

The Church of the Intercession has a rich history and no less turbulent fate. In the place where this church is located, there were already several temples. So, one of them was erected in 1685 near the remains of the Armenian Church of the Nativity of the Virgin that burned down in 1651. In the 18th century, the wooden church was dismantled and a new one was built in its place, made of stone. The project of the temple was developed by the architect I. Grigorovich-Barsky. The exact date of construction is unknown - some researchers prefer 1772, others - 1766, and both dates, surprisingly, are documented. The temple was badly damaged by the great fire of 1811, therefore, during the restoration, its dome, made in the Ukrainian Baroque style, was replaced with a dome in the classicism style. Also, the temple ceased to be divided into upper and lower, the stairs at the porches were removed. The decor of the temple was only partially restored. In 1824, another reconstruction was carried out, within the framework of which a new warm church was erected from the western facade.

In the Soviet years, the Church of the Intercession was used in different ways. At first, there was a regional archive, and in 1946 the warm church was handed over to the Orthodox community. After the renovation in 1946-1948, the entire church was transferred to the Orthodox community. During the major reconstruction in 1950, the domes and roofs were noticeably changed, the cornices and the basement were restored. Since 1969, the temple was rented by the Ukrainian society for the protection of historical monuments - there were warehouses and a production workshop. After that, the Church of the Intercession was restored several more times, moreover, the restoration of the 70s was carried out mainly on the basis of historical documents. Today it is a functioning church belonging to the community of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
