Photo and description

Rubiana is a small village located in a picturesque location in Vallone del Messa, which has a cool climate in summer and relatively warm winters. It is an important tourist resort ideal for aged travelers and families with children. Rubiana is located in the Italian Val di Susa with its rocky peaks, forests and mountain slopes that have been used as pastures for centuries. According to historians, one of the first inhabitants of these places were the Celtic tribes - they worshiped forest deities, like the god Arubian, from whose name, probably, the name of the village originated. According to other sources, the toponym Rubiana comes from the Latin word "ruber", which means "red" and refers to the reddish soils of this part of the valley. The color of the soil, by the way, indicates the presence of a significant amount of iron in it, which is confirmed by the intensive development of the iron industry on Mount Arpone in the 16-17th centuries.

After the Second World War, Rubiana became an important center of the anti-fascist movement ... Locals even erected a memorial obelisk on the Colle del Lis hill in memory of all those who died during the bloody regime. There is also an ecomuseum, which, among other things, acquaints visitors with the history of the resistance movement.

Of the sights of Rubiana, it is worth noting the parish church of Sant'Egidio, built in 1607 on the main city square, the Mompellato church in the area of the same name, dedicated to Saints Grato and Maria Maddalena, and a small Romanesque church in the area of Celle di Capri, a scenic trail leading to it along the southern slopes of the valley. Also noteworthy is the monastery of Madonna della Bassa, built in 1714 on the border between Rubiana and Valdellatorre. It was named after the hill on which it stands - Colle della Bassa. The monastery is located on the ridge that separates Vallone del Messa from Valle del Casternone, at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level. Three religious holidays are celebrated there every year - in June, August and September.
