Photo and description

In the mansion that once belonged to the Szolaiski family, on Szczepanska Square, there is a museum of the famous Krakow artist, who is known not only throughout Poland, but also in the world - Stanislaw Wyspianski. Wlodzimezh and Adam Szolaiski donated their house to the city in 1904 on the condition that its premises be used for an exhibition of Wyspianski's works. In 1928, the doors of the Sholayskys' house were opened to the general public. Since then, the exposition of objects related to the life and work of the famous painter has not moved to another place. At first, the Wyspianski Museum was an independent institution, but now it is part of the larger National Museum of the city of Krakow.

The Wyspianski Museum appeared in Krakow on the initiative of the artist himself, who was born in this city and worked here for a long time. In 1901, he brought and donated to the National Museum a series of drawings depicting stained glass windows for the local cathedral. These fantasies were not brought to life, but they came in handy for a temporary exhibition. Subsequently, according to the master's will, they became the property of the National Museum, like some other sketches. In 1920, the collector and the finest connoisseur of arts Felix Yasensky donated to the museum a series of drawings that belonged to Vyspiansky.

In the early 1930s, to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of a world-famous artist, the museum opened a permanent exhibition of his works. In the 70s, the idea of organizing the House of Stanislav Vyspyansky appeared, which began its work in 1983 on Kanonikov Street. However, the terms of the lease forced the organizers of the museum to look for new premises, which were found on Shchepanskaya Square. Unfortunately, now you can see only a few of Vyspiansky's works. Basically, the exhibition halls of the Sholaysky house are used for temporary exhibitions organized by the National Museum.
