Photo and description

The current building of the Minsk City Hall was built in 1600 on the territory of the Upper Market, now it is the Freedom Square. The building was decorated with a clock - for those times it was an unheard of luxury. And in the town hall itself were kept standards of units of weight and volume, and, of course, meetings of the city magistrate were held.

In 1744, the building was reconstructed, it acquired the features of the classicism style popular in those years. In 1795 the Magdeburg Law was revoked. Since then, this building has housed the city court and housed the police, and later - a music school and even a theater.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Russian Emperor Nicholas I ordered the destruction of the town hall building - a symbol of independence and freedom of the Poles. A century and a half must have passed so that Belarusians restore this symbolic building already on the territory of their own state, independent from Russia. But first, the architects and historians studied the old drawings, archival materials, and only after these careful surveys, the town hall building was restored according to the project of the architect S. Baglasov.

On the tower of the town hall you can see the coat of arms of the city of Minsk and a clock with a dial 120 cm in diameter. Every hour the chimes perform the melody “Songs about Minsk” written by Igor Luchenok, a famous Belarusian composer.
