Mergozzo description and photos - Italy: Lake Maggiore. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Mergozzo. Photo and descriptionMergozzo is one of the most picturesque villages on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Since spring, it is filled with tourists and becomes a very popular holiday destination on the lake. Its old stone houses huddle together, separated only by narrow spans. The central square of Mergozzo is decorated with a huge ancient elm tree - according to historical documents, it is at least 400 years old! Today this tree, completely empty inside, is called the “monumental tree of Piedmont”. Mergozzo has been inhabited since antiquity, as evidenced by the exhibits collected in the local Antique Museum - they date back to the Bronze Age. There you can also see the ancient tools once used to extract and shape granite from the Montorfano quarries and marble from Candolia. An important megalithic complex with a serpentine trench is located in the town of Groppole. An elliptical structure surrounded by a stone wall and covered with a huge granite boulder, this structure is known as the Ca 'd'la Norma and dates from the Neolithic era. The careful placement of boulders, a wide foreground and petroglyphs on the outer surface suggest that this was a megalithic burial complex erected by a society that has reached a certain level of self-organization. In the vicinity of Mergozzo, there are several trails that lead through the picturesque countryside. For example, Sentiero Azzurro - the Blue Trail - leads to the village of Montorfano. The beaches of Mergozzo are very popular with both locals and tourists, where you can play beach volleyball or sit in a bar. Playgrounds are provided for children. And you should definitely try the "fugachine" - a delicious pie that is prepared only in Mergozzo. You can get to this town by taking the highway from Domodossola.
