Photo and description

At the intersection of Decumanus and Cardo Streets, the Zucato Palace rises, now turned into an art gallery. Although the Gothic mansion has retained its original appearance, the historic interiors and layout have not survived.

The Zucato Palace is a three-story building, built in the 13th century during the Romanesque period. Initially, only the basement was erected, two centuries later, another level and an attic were set up. The first floor of the palace is made of stone, the second is made of bricks. The third floor is decorated with architectural details (window frames, cornices, supports for them), carved from stone, which stand out brightly against the background of a reddish brick wall. The main facade overlooking Decumanus Street is decorated with double lancet windows in the Gothic style. Other windows are single. One of them is framed with luxurious floral designs. Part of the facade on the side of Cardo Street is made of stone brought from the island of Korcula. This building material can be recognized by its color.

During the Second World War, Zukato's palace was damaged by a bomb explosion. It was restored in 1953. Another reconstruction took place in 2003-2004. It became necessary after the damage caused to the mansion by heavy traffic along the two main streets of the historic center of Porec. At first, only the first floor was repaired, and the other two were simply boarded up.

Currently, the Zukato Palace is the property of the city of Porec. Over the past few years, all three floors and the basement have been rebuilt in accordance with museum requirements. Exhibitions of paintings and photographs are often held here.
