For the first time, the topic of opening a local history museum in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug was raised in 1929 at a meeting of the Presidium of the Executive Committee. It was noted at the meeting that local history work in this region carries important functions, which is why it is necessary to create a local history museum.

The museum premises were planned to be located on the second floor of the post office, and Mikhail Bazykin was to be appointed as the head - Secretary of the Regional Bureau of Local History. Existing material that would be housed in the new museum was reviewed. In the fall of 1931, the local history bureau decided on a possible exhibition of this material, and the museum was allocated a room in the building of the executive committee, in the place of the early location of the people's court and police - in Telvisk. G.D. was chosen as the head for the agreement of the museum material. Verbov, but the work was never carried out. In 1932, all museum collections were removed from Telviska, after which N.F. Plettsov was entrusted with organizing the museum.

The first exhibition of the local history museum took place in February 1933 in the House of the Nenets. The exhibition consisted of several sections: everyday life, history, culture, hunting and fishing, communications and transport, as well as industry. After the exhibition ended, the exhibits began to move in different directions, because the museum never acquired a permanent room. Some of the exhibits have been lost. In the fall of 1934, the work of the local history museum was resumed with the work of the head M.I. Molodtsova. The museum is located on the first floor of the Nenets House, in which the opening of an exhibition of polar plant growing took place.

In the winter of 2009, the museum acquired its own building, which was completely suitable for all types of exhibits with a total area of 1272 sq. m. To date, the collection of local history museum has about 32 thousand items. One of the most valuable and expensive collections is the collection dedicated to Nenets ethnography, which fully reflects the spiritual and material side of the indigenous peoples of the European tundra dating back to the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

works by Vylka I.K., Borisov A.A., Veleisoky N.V., Lednikova M.A. The collection is represented by graphic works by A. Rybachuk, V. Melnichensko, Yavorik Yu. Of particular pride are the museum collections of art, represented by the icons of the Lower Pechora churches of the 18-19th centuries.

The museum has an excellent collection of rocks presented in the region - fluorites, amethysts, agates and many others. Here you can see stuffed animals of a wide variety of animals, fish and birds. Of particular interest are the paleontological finds, including the bones of a mammoth, the skull of a trogontery elephant, and traces of ancient plants.

It should be noted that the museum has a scientific library - one of the best in the field. It contains a full edition of books on historical topics, as well as the culture of peoples living on the territory of the European tundra. Of great interest is the collection of documentary photographs, including the works of A.P. Pyrerka, I.P. Vyucheysky, Golubkova M.R., Evsyugina A.D ..
