Photo and description

The History Museum in Kardzhali is located in a building built at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, it was intended for a madrasah, but it never played this role. The museum is surrounded by a park where plant species typical for Bulgaria (and found only here) grow.

From 1934 to 1947, the building was used for military purposes. Then it became an official branch of the University of Plovdiv and at the same time - a school. The building was converted into a museum in the 1980s. In 2005, the building was declared an architectural monument at the national level by order of the Minister of Culture.

The total area of the exhibition halls is 1300 sq. M. The first floor is occupied by nine halls, in which the life of the region from the 6th millennium BC is presented in chronological order. and before the Middle Ages. Of particular interest is the reconstructed neolithic burial mound “Selishtna Grave”, as well as photographs of sanctuaries and rock tombs. Here you can also see Roman ceramics, queen slabs, adornments and jewelry from necropolises, and so on.

The second floor is divided into four halls and here the natural features of the eastern part of the Rhodope are recreated. Among other things, you can see fossils - fossils of sea urchins, shellfish and stars, trees and corals, as well as fish. In addition, the museum has photographs of unique rock forms ("Stone mushrooms", "Elephant", "Broken Mountain", "Petrified Forest" and others) and a collection of ore minerals and herbs.

The third floor is dedicated to the ethnographic exposition, which is located in ten rooms. The exhibits included in the exposition belong to the 19th-20th centuries. Specialists have reconstructed typical regional crafts: agriculture, metalworking, animal husbandry, shoemaking and others. Home crafts are represented by the skill of spinners and knitters.
