The monument to the letter Ў in Polotsk was erected on September 7, 2003, in the jubilee year of the tenth celebration of the day of Belarusian writing.

The choice of the installation of the monument in the city of Polotsk, the most enlightened ancient city of the country, closely connected with the history of Belarusian book printing, is not accidental. Polotsk is the city of the oldest Jesuit collegium, the city of Simeon of Polotsk and Efrosinya of Polotsk - the heavenly patrons and enlighteners of the Belarusian people.

It is no coincidence that the place where the monument to the letter Ў is erected is a square named in honor of the Belarusian pioneer printer Francysk Skorina.

This unique letter, which has become the symbol of the Belarusian alphabet, consisting of 32 letters, has 22 serial number. There is no such letter in any alphabet in the world. According to statistics, conducted by linguistic scientists, the sound denoted by short is most often found in Belarusian speech. It is he who gives the speech softness and melody.

The author of the monument to the Belarusian letter itself is an outstanding sculptor, associate professor of the sculpture department of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Finsky.

The monument is made in the form of a stele, on which the letter Ў is captured, as well as the entire Belarusian alphabet. The stele can also serve as a sundial. When a fine day is issued, this sundial can be used to determine the time of day.

At the most patriotic monument of Belarus rallies and meetings, holidays, celebrations, and festivities are held. Belarus is very proud of the fact that it has the most cultured and reading population.
