The small orthodox church of Agios Elias (St. Elias), located in the city of Protaras, was built in honor of the prophet Elijah in the XIV century. It is located at the top of a cliff near the sea coast. A narrow and steep staircase leads to the church. Moreover, local residents believe that if you count its steps during the ascent and descent and at the same time do not lose count, so that their number eventually coincides, this will mean absolution of all sins.

The Church of Ayios Elias is made in traditional Byzantine style and is famous, above all, for its beautiful old painting, which has been very well preserved to this day. These drawings mainly depict scenes from the Bible as well as Orthodox saints. In general, the inside of the church looks rather modest, but cozy - there is a simple wooden altar, the walls, not covered with painting, are painted white. The roof of the temple is crowned with a dome and a high cross, traditional for the Byzantine style, and there is also a small bell tower.

But in the evening and at night this building can seem like a real palace thanks to the beautiful illumination that literally transforms Ayios Elias.

Next to the temple, which is very popular in Cyprus, there is a tree of desires - for the dream to come true, a ribbon or scarf must be tied to a branch. Moreover, tourists often cut off a piece of their clothes for this purpose.

Despite its rather considerable age, the church of Agios Elias is in excellent condition. The temple has undergone several restoration work, thanks to which it was possible to preserve all the beauty of this ancient structure.
