Photo and descriptionThe Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the main church of Trapani, built at the beginning of the 15th century by order of King Alfonso V the Magnanimous and more than once in its history has undergone various reconstructions. In the second half of the 15th century, it became a parish church, and in 1844 Pope Gregory XVI granted it the status of a cathedral. The cathedral acquired its present appearance in 1748, when, according to the project of the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico, side chapels, a dome, a bell tower were added and a new facade was made. And in the period between 1794 and 1801, the decorations were made: stucco in the neoclassical style - the creation of Girolamo Rizzo and Onofrio Noto, and Vincenzo Manno worked on the creation of the frescoes. Inside, the cathedral consists of a central nave and two side chapels, separated by two rows of imposing columns of Sicilian jasper. The interior is decorated with various paintings on religious subjects: one depicts the "Crucifixion" by the great Flemish artist Van Dyck, the other - "God the Father" by Domenico La Bruna. The portrait of St. George was painted by Andrea Carreca. And the statue depicting the death of Christ - the so-called "incarnata" - the creation of Giacomo Tartaglia. The main dome of the cathedral, surrounded by four other smaller ones, is supported by an original vestibule with square sections. And next to the majestic church is the Episcopal Palace.
