Stromboli island (Isola Stromboli) description and photos - Italy: Lipari (Aeolian) islands. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Isola Stromboli. Photo and descriptionStromboli is one of the most famous islands of the Lipari archipelago. There is an active volcano of the same name, which has been erupting continuously over the past two thousand years! Small eruptions happen every 10-15 minutes, and the last major eruption happened in 2009. The height of the volcano is 926 meters above sea level, and if you count from the seabed, it reaches 2 thousand meters. On its surface, there are three craters and the Shara del Fuoco - "stream of fire" - a horseshoe-shaped depression that has formed over the past 13 thousand years. Stromboli Island itself is relatively small. Its permanent population is only about 800 people, and almost everyone here is employed in the tourism business. There are only three settlements on the island - San Bartolo and San Vincenzo in the northeast and Ginostra in the northwest. Tourists arrive in Stromboli in organized groups to climb the top of the volcano and watch its eruptions. At night, these eruptions are visible over long distances, and therefore the volcano is often called the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean". In addition, you can see the Stromboliccio rock, located 2 km northeast of Stromboli. It is the remnant of the original volcano. There is a lighthouse at the top of Strombolicchio, which is reached by a staircase of 200 steps - it is also a tourist attraction.
