Photo & Description

Battary Point is the historic heart of Hobart, an area of opulent mansions, quaint sailor cottages and shipyards. The district got its name from a battery of guns installed here in 1818 for the coastal defense of the city. Here you can still feel the spirit of a fishing village of the last century and enjoy the atmosphere of colonial Hobart.

Battary Point was once a residential area that was inhabited by sailors, and today people live here. It's easy to get here - the famous Kelly Steps lead directly from the Salamanca area.

One of the main attractions of Battary Point is the so-called Arthur's Circle - a row of old houses that surround the villa in the heart of the area. Today, there are many tea houses and restaurants, pubs and cafes, souvenir shops and small private galleries.

Battary Point is also home to excellent museums - the Tasmanian Maritime Museum and the Colonial Museum. In the latter one can see household items of local residents of the 19th century - dresses, umbrellas, dishes. Of particular interest is the Van Diemen Land People's Museum, a Georgian building set in lovely gardens.

Anglesey Barracks - Australia's oldest military establishment - is also located at Battery Point. They were built in 1811 and until recently were used for their intended purpose. Today the Australian War Museum is located in the barracks. And not far from them is the pretty Anglican Church of St. George, built in 1836.
