Photo & Description

The city of Lagos, where the castle is located, is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal and is known for its clean beaches, restaurants and hotels, which is famous for its lively and festive atmosphere in summer period, nightlife and parties.

Lagos also played an important role in the period of the Great Geographic Open. Lagos was one of the cities frequently visited by the Portuguese Heinrich the Navigator, where shipbuilding began. For some time Lagos was also the center of the slave trade; the first slave market in Europe was opened in the city.

There are many historical monuments in Lagos, among which the castle of Lagos stands out. It will be interesting to visit the old part of the city, which is surrounded by fortress walls. The fortress walls were erected in the 16th century, when Lagos was the seat of the governors of the Algarve. Lagos Castle, built by the Arabs, is to the right of the old town. There is an assumption that the castle was built in the second half of the 8th century. A little later, when the city was conquered by Portuguese troops, additional construction work was carried out, which made the fortress more resistant to attacks. The walls of the castle were 2 meters thick, and the height ranged from 7.5 meters to 10 meters, along the perimeter the top of the castle was crowned with loopholes and battlements.

Lagos Castle is also called the Castle of Governors, since somewhere in the middle of the 17th century, the castle housed the residence of the city governor. Since 1924, Lagos Castle has been included in the list of monuments of national importance in Portugal. In 1950, restoration work was carried out.
