Photo and description

The resort town of Bardolino, situated on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, is part of the province of Verona and is located 130 km west of Venice and 25 km north-west of Verona. The economy of this small town is based primarily on tourism and wine production.

The territory of modern Bardolino has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological finds. Here, traces of ancient Roman settlements were found, although the current city was founded only in the early Middle Ages, when in the 10th century Berengar of Italica built a fortress here. In the 12th century, Bardolino was known as an independent commune, and later came under the rule of the Scaliger family, who expanded and strengthened the local fortifications. After the fall of the Scaligers, the town became part of the Venetian Republic, which located its naval base here, and even later was part of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. Bardolino and the Austrians were at the "helm". Only in 1866 did the city become part of the united Italy.

Today Bardolino is a popular tourist resort. Its old center, surrounded by the ruins of the medieval city walls, is of particular interest. In the 11th century Romanesque church of San Severo, you can see frescoes depicting scenes from the Apocalypse. The churches of San Vito and San Zeno from the mid-9th century, the 12th century Church of San Nicolo and the ancient monastery of San Colombano are worth seeing. Scattered throughout the territory of Bardolino are luxurious villas, most of which were built in the 19th century - Villa Bottagisio, Villa Guerrieri, Villa Marzan, Villa Raimondi and Villa Giuliani-Gianfilippi. Not far from the city's harbor are the Palazzo Gelmetti with a tower and the Loggia Rambaldi. The city's museums are no less interesting: one is dedicated to wine and olive oil, and the second, the Sizan Museum, is dedicated to fishing and bird hunting.

Fans of outdoor activities will love windsurfing and paraflying, as well as sailing. On the perfectly clean beaches of Bardolino, you can relax and sunbathe. Not far from the city are the amusement parks Gardaland, Caneva World and Movie Studios.
