Photo & Description

St Fagans National History Museum is an open air museum located in Cardiff, Wales, UK. It presents the history, culture and architecture of Wales from the ancient Celtic era to the present day. It is one of Europe's leading open-air museums and one of Wales's most popular tourist attractions.

The museum was opened on November 1, 1948. It is located in the grounds of the magnificent Castle of St. Fagans and the surrounding gardens. St Fagans Castle is a fine example of Elizabethan architecture, one of the most beautiful in Wales. It was built in 1580. In the 19th century, the interiors of the building underwent significant alterations. The rooms are now furnished as they were at the end of the 19th century, when the family of Lord Robert-Windsor lived here, who donated the estate with gardens to the National Museum of Wales in 1946. Sainte Fagans Gardens is an Italian garden, planted in 1902 and rebuilt in 2003, fish ponds, fountains, a mulberry grove, a vineyard and a beautiful rose garden.

Over the 50 years of the museum's existence, more than forty original buildings representing various historical eras have been transported here and placed on the territory of the museum. Visitors can see a chapel, a mill, a post office, residential buildings, a pigsty and other buildings. Some of these exhibits work according to the principle of "living history" - they are a working smithy, a mill and a weaving workshop. The products of these workshops can be bought here, in the souvenir shops. Round Celtic houses always attract a lot of attention. They were built around a central bearing pillar, the walls were made of wattle fences coated with clay.

Since 1996, the museum has served as the venue for the summer theater festival, within the framework of which children's events of the English and Welsh languages are held.
