Photo and description

The monument to Ivan Susanin was erected in 1867 in Kostroma. Its author is the sculptor N.A. Lavinsky. Earlier, in Kostroma, a monument was already erected to commemorate the famous feat of the Time of Troubles - a monument to Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich and the peasant Ivan Susanin, designed by V.I. Demut-Malinovsky. The monument stood in the center of Susaninskaya square in the city center. But in 1918-1928. it was destroyed.

The highest permission for its construction followed in 1835 when Nicholas I visited Kostroma. The monument was opened in March 1851. In 1900, a public garden was laid out around it.

Immediately after the revolution, the monument was threatened with destruction. Its destruction began in 1918, when the bust of the Tsar and the sculpture of Susanin were thrown from the column and pedestal.

For a whole decade, the column was covered by a wooden obelisk topped with a red flag. The pedestal was used as a tribune during various revolutionary celebrations. In 1928, the obelisk fell into disrepair, and it was decided to throw the column off the pedestal and bury it in the park. The monument was finally demolished in 1934

Today, a temporary memorial sign stands on the site of this monument on Susaninskaya Square. By 2013, the monument is planned to be restored and returned to its place. The monument was a column made of red granite, standing on a quadrangular pedestal, which was crowned with a bust of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich with a gilded cross on his chest, barmas and Monomakh's hat. A double-headed eagle was placed under the bust, the coat of arms of the Kostroma province was fortified in the middle of the column. At the base of the column stood a kneeling figure of Susanin, to his left lay two letters of honor to his descendants.

The composition was turned towards the Torgovy Ryad and the Volga. On the front side of the pedestal, a bas-relief was attached, which depicted the scene of the murder of Susanin.

Work on the creation of a modern monument to Ivan Susanin began in 1959. The project of the monument was created by a young sculptor N.A. Lavinsky. This was his graduation work in 1952. Work on the erection of the monument began on the edge of Susaninskaya Square, on the site of the destroyed in the 1920s. chapels of Alexander Nevsky.

But soon after the start, construction work was suspended. Only in 1965 the regional administration managed to reverse the situation, and construction was resumed. The monument was solemnly unveiled on September 28, 1967. The authors of the monument were present at the opening: sculptor N.А. Lavinsky, architects M.F. Markovsky and M.P. Bubnov.

Now, due to the fact that it is planned to recreate the old monument to Susanin, the possibility of moving the modern monument to the national hero to the place of his feat in the village of Domnino, Kostroma region, Susaninsky district, is being considered. The modern monument is a figure of a peasant in long clothes, which stands on a massive cylindrical pedestal. The figure and the facing of the pedestal are made of white limestone. The figure is turned to the river and its back is turned to the Susaninskaya Square.

Lavinsky was working on the image of Ivan Susanin even before the decision to erect the monument was made. He created it for a long time, persistently and in love. As a result, he created an artistically reliable image of a Russian patriot. Lavinsky's Susanin is not only a figure that expresses human heroism, but also a person's personality, which is filled with great life content and love for the homeland and his land.

In the image of Susanin, with obvious artistic power, Lavinsky revealed the greatness of a Russian man who goes to his death with full consciousness of what is happening, like fulfilling a duty to his native country and long-suffering land.
