Photo & Description

The Thorvaldsen Museum is a majestic historical landmark in Copenhagen and Denmark. It is located near the royal residence of Christiansborg.

By order of King Frederick VI, a plot of land was allocated specifically for the construction of the museum, the author of this building was the young architect M.G. Bindesbelle. There are five doors on the central facade of the building, the outer walls of the structure are decorated with beautiful figured frescoes, and there is an inner courtyard on the territory of the museum. The gallery windows are high above the multicolored mosaic floor, and the ceiling vaults are decorated with Pompeian-style patterns.

There are sculptures in the lobby on the first floor of the Thorvaldsen Museum, paintings on the second floor and offices in the basement of the building. In addition, here you can watch the process of creating a sculpture.

Thorvaldsen's gallery contains many sculptures dedicated to the ancient Roman deities Adonis, Hercules, Psyche and many others. The museum has about 20,000 exhibits, mainly the works of Thorvaldsen himself: his works of art, made in plaster, marble, many drawings, sketches. Also in the museum are presented for inspection the personal collections of Bertel Thorvaldsen - interior items, glass and bronze products, musical instruments, clothes, snuff boxes, coins, glasses, and, of course, working tools.

March 24, 1844 ceased beating the heart of the great sculptor Thorvaldsen, he died a week before the opening of the museum in his honor.
