Kutai National Park is located on a plain on the east coast of Borneo, in the province of East Kalimantan. The park is located approximately 50 km north of the equator, as well as north of the Mahakam River, in the basin of which there are more than 76 lakes. The towns of Bontang and Sangatta are located near the national park, and the administrative center of East Kalimantan province - Samarinda - is 120 km from the park.

The territory of the Kutai National Park is about 2000 sq. km, and since the 70s of the twentieth century it has been a nature conservation area. Unfortunately, the national park suffers from illegal logging and the emergence of mining companies. In 1982-1983, there were fires that destroyed large areas of the forest, and today about 30% of the forests are preserved.
