Photo and description
Neusiedl am See is an Austrian city located on the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl at an altitude of 133 meters above sea level in the federal state of Burgenland.
The first mention of the city dates back to 1209. In the middle of the 13th century, it was destroyed by the Mongols, and by 1282 it received the name `` Niusidel ''. In 1517, the city received market rights and began to actively develop. However, in 1683, Neusiedl am See was besieged by Turkish troops, and in 1708 it was devastated by the Kuruts, Hungarian rebels who fought against the Habsburgs from 1671 to 1711.
After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918 the population of Burgenland expressed a desire to become part of Austria, since 74% of the people living in Burgenland were German-speaking. According to the peace treaty, Burgenland, including the city of Neusiedl am See, became part of Austria on August 28, 1921.
Neusiedl am See in 1926 received city rights, which he had unsuccessfully sought from 1824.
Tourists come to Neusiedl am See all year round. In the summertime, people come here for the beautiful beaches, as well as surfing and sailing. From spring to late autumn, Neusiedl am See, thanks to its excellent transport links, is a popular starting point for cycling in the Neusiedlersee area. During the winter months, the city skates on a frozen lake.
Thanks to the success of sailing at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, a federal sailing center was established in Neusiedl am See.
