Photo and description

The Volcano San Venanzo Park and Museum occupies an area in Umbria around three small volcanic craters, each about 500 meters in diameter and up to 30 meters high, which were active about 250 thousand years ago ... The sea that covered this area in prehistoric times is today known as the Sea of San Venanzo after the name of the nearby town. In addition to craters, there are other interesting geological formations, for example, the so-called Pian di Celle - a volcanic tuff rock 800 meters to the south. Or Anello di Lapilli di Celli - a rock 500 meters east of Pian di Celle.

Visiting volcanic craters and viewing frozen lava flows is very popular with tourists coming to Umbria. Here you can find rare stones and minerals, the most famous of which is undoubtedly venanzite.

Over the years, the San Venanzo Park Museum has become one of the main attractions for eco-tourism enthusiasts, as well as for numerous groups of schoolchildren who come here on excursions. Here, with the help of experienced employees, you can learn a lot of interesting facts about unusual rock formations, about the processes of metamorphism and volcanoes of the planet. The museum itself is located in a historic building in the old center of San Venanzo near the Villa Comunale park. Expositions in each room introduce visitors to the volcano of San Venanzo and bring them closer to understanding world geology. Of particular interest is the open-air section of the museum - a 2-kilometer route that clearly demonstrates the history of the volcano, during which you can also see the remains of an ancient quarry - an excellent example of how building material was mined in antiquity.
