Photo and description

Herberstein Castle is the ancestral home of the Herbenstein barons, which throughout its history belonged and belongs only to this family. The castle was never conquered by enemy armies, it was not robbed by robbers and was not ravaged by the Soviet army. Such loyalty on the part of Soviet officers can be easily explained: Zygmunt von Herberstein, who lived in the late 15th - early 16th centuries, was a famous historian who wrote several fundamental works on the history of the Muscovite kingdom. Some of the leaders of the Soviet troops saw a portrait of Zygmunt von Herberstein in the castle gallery and ordered not to touch the property of his descendants.

Herberstein Castle is located on an impregnable rock near the Faistritz River. You can get into it only from one side, for which you will have to go through a vast park in which a zoo is set up - perhaps the main local entertainment, although the castle and the adjacent gardens are also worthy of attention.

The zoo at the castle appeared in the 17th century. Its area is 40 hectares. When purchasing an admission ticket, each guest is given a zoo card. It is conventionally divided into continents. There are aviaries with African and Australian animals. On the other side are animals brought from Africa. Predators are in closed enclosures, and mammals graze freely on the grass and are separated from visitors only by a picturesque fence made of logs. The most popular pavilion is the one where funny monkeys live. It is located right in the center of the park, from where you can reach the castle in minutes. Even those guests who are limited in time and do not want to spend it on walking around the zoo, preferring to first see the castle, the rose garden and landscaped gardens, be sure to come to see the monkeys.

The kids should definitely show ponies and goats that can be fed directly from hands.
