Photo and description

The Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, was built in 1257. The buildings bordering the square, erected in the XIV-XV centuries, have been rebuilt more than once over time.

In the center of the square there is a grandiose building of Cloth Hall. In 1358, by order of Casimir the Great, a single, 100 meters long, trading hall was built. In 1558, a Renaissance stucco attic was added, and in 1875, a neo-Gothic arcade. On the second floor, in addition to spacious halls for balls and receptions, the Gallery of Polish Painting was set up. Now on the first floor of the building there are souvenir shops, and on the second - the People's Museum dedicated to national painting and sculpture.
