Photo and description

In the southern part of the picturesque island of Rhodes, about 80 km from the capital, in the middle of a fertile valley, there is a small village of Kattavia. This is a traditional Greek settlement with its own special flavor, a relaxing atmosphere of peace and comfort, as well as genuine hospitality and cordiality of the locals. The permanent population of Cattavia does not exceed 200 people.

This area has been inhabited since ancient times. During archaeological excavations near Cattavia, an ancient settlement was discovered that is of great interest to historians and archaeologists. Artifacts found during excavations can be seen in the Rhodes Archaeological Museum. Cattavia itself, during the reign of the Knights Hospitallers on the island, was a well-fortified settlement, where in the event of an attack by the Turks, the locals were relatively safe.

Among the main attractions of Cattavia, it is worth noting the perfectly preserved Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the 10th century, and the Church of St. Paraskeva (19th century), which is considered the patroness of the village, and the inhabitants of Kattavia celebrate its day on July 26 with large-scale festivities. The Orthodox churches of St. George (17th century), the Prophet Elijah (19th century), St. Minas (19th century), Apostle Paul (20th century), St. Panteleimon (20th century) and the Catholic Church of St. Mark (20 century).

Not far from Cattavia (about 6-7 km) there is a real paradise and one of the best places in Europe for fans of windsurfing and kitesurfing - Prasonisi (ideal for both professionals and beginners). This is a truly unique place where the Aegean and Mediterranean waters that wash Rhodes merge in winter to form a small island. In the summer, Prasonisi is connected to Rhodes by a small sand bar (isthmus).

The tourist infrastructure of Cattavia is not yet well developed. As a rule, tourists who come to Prasonisi stop here. However, in Cattavia you will still find a small selection of hotels and comfortable apartments, which should be taken care of in advance.
