Photo and description

Mahagnao Volcano National Park is one of the largest national parks in the Philippines, created in 1937. It covers an area of 635 hectares. The easiest way to get here is from the city of Tacloban - the bus journey takes only about an hour. The best time to visit is from September to May when the dry season is on Leyte Island.

The main attractions of the park are two lakes located in the crater of the volcano - the cool fresh Mahagnao Lake and the warm Malagsum Lake with emerald water. The latter is ideal for swimming as well as boating. The lakes are connected by a path overgrown with centuries-old trees. In the waters of Malagsum, residents of the nearby village of Burauen love to fish.

The park attracts tourists with its amazing landscapes and incredible wildlife - while traveling through the protected area, you can see whole placers of exotic flowers, including orchids and lilies, giant ferns, a variety of tropical bushes, picturesque birds. Along the way, you will often see dazzling waterfalls, the most famous of which is the Ginaniban Falls, and rushing streams.

Another popular tourist attraction in the park is the Mahagnao volcano, also known as Kaziboy. It is a dormant volcano located near the villages of La Paz and Bourauen in the province of Leyte. The height of Mahagnao is 860 meters, and the walls of its crater are covered with forest. The last eruption of Mahagnao was recorded in 1895.

You can stay in the park with an overnight stay - a small camp is set up on the shores of Lake Mahagnao, which can accommodate from 30 to 40 guests.
