The largest glacier in Europe, the Justedalsbreen, is a vast plateau with numerous icy tongues extending from it. The national park was founded here on October 25, 1991. It is located on the territory of several municipalities and covers an area of 1230 sq. km. The well-known glaciers - Nigardsbreen, Bergsetbreen, Tuftebreen, Fabergstolsbreen and Autsdalsbreen - originate from this huge mass of ice and stretch towards the Yusterdallen Valley.

The glacier covers an area of 475 kilometers, its 26 branches descend to the foot of the mountains. The contrast between the fertile valleys and the glaciers that descend to nearly every sea is striking to say the least. It should be noted that walking on the glacier is difficult and even dangerous. There are several primitive shelters on the glacier,
