The Santa Justa Lift (also called the Do Carmo Lift) vertically connects the lower and upper town. It was built at the beginning of the twentieth century by the French architect Raoul Messnier du Ponsard, a student of the famous architect Eiffel.

Filigree patterns adorn the pillars of the lift, made of cast iron. Two booths move up and down, each for 25 people. There is a cafe at the top of the lift, offering a magnificent view of Lisbon and its suburbs.
