Photo and description

The Church of San Clement (St. Clement) is one of the most ancient cult sights of Andorra. The temple is located in the ski resort of Pal-Arinsal.

The first mention of the temple of San Clement dates back to 1312, but there is evidence of an earlier construction on this site. Historians believe that the bell tower was built in the late 11th - early 12th centuries.

The Church of San Clemente was built in the Romanesque style that was widespread at that time. The temple was under the jurisdiction of La Massana and was very popular with the locals.

The nave of the monastery of San Clemente, like other Christian churches, is directed from west to east. The northern part is somewhat expanded in the form of a chapel and other utility rooms. The temple is crowned with a bell tower, which is one of the most famous in the Principality of Andorra. The bell tower, decorated with ribbons and arches, has three floors and high windows. The roof of the bell tower is slightly flattened. The apse of the Church of San Clemente is square in plan, not round. All this testifies to the late reconstruction of the structure, which was most likely carried out in the 17th - 18th centuries.

The main attractions of the Church of San Clemente are two fonts, two wooden crosses of the 12th century, a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was supposedly created in the 13th century. In addition, the monastery is decorated with a Baroque altar in honor of St. Bartholomew, erected at the beginning of the 18th century. instead of the destroyed old one.

Today the Church of San Clemente is a working temple open to the public.
