Photo and description

A picturesque green area with exotic plants and a pond under the sign of the Botanical Garden of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University is located in the very center of Kaliningrad. The park zone with an area of about fourteen hectares is a nursery for 2.5 thousand plants, of which 39 species are listed in the Red Book.

The Botanical Garden was founded in 1904 by the head of the Department of Higher Plants of the University - Professor Paul Keber on the territory of the city Konigsberg horticulture. The green zone was formed for the practical training of university students and supplied the Konigsberg schools with plants for botany classes. A memorial plaque was erected in honor of the founder of the garden, which has survived to this day. In 1938, the German greenhouse plant fund numbered more than four thousand items. At the end of World War II, the botanical garden was completely destroyed.

In Soviet times, a Research Station for Green Building was organized on the territory of the Konigsberg Botanical Garden, whose workers built new greenhouses, restored greenhouses and cleaned up the pond. In 1959, tropical and subtropical plants from the Moscow Botanical Garden were brought to the green economy, which served as an incentive for further replenishment of the collection with rare species. In 1967 the nursery was transferred to the Kaliningrad University and to this day is considered its scientific division.

Today the Kaliningrad Botanical Garden is a landscaped green area with a complex of greenhouses, tree nurseries, greenhouses, collection sites for woody and herbaceous plants and a picturesque pond in the center. The most remarkable plants in the garden are two sixty-year-old date palms and a 110-year-old guardian, Livistona chinensis, which is over fourteen meters high. For the latter, a superstructure was made in the greenhouse.
