Travnik is a city of interest with beautiful old architecture, churches, mosques and other interesting and beautiful places. Its name comes from the words "meadow", "pasture", "grassy place", which in South Slavic sounds like "travnik".

The main attraction and pride of the city, an ancient fortress was built at least in the XIV century, before the beginning of the Ottoman occupation. The characteristic construction technique allows us to attribute it to the times of the Bosnian kingdom. The remains of buildings from that period are now another pride of Travnik.

This small town became famous in the Middle Ages. Then he flourished and played an important political and strategic role in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Largely due to the geographical proximity to Sarajevo.

The first mention of the city dates back to 1463, when Mehmed II, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, stayed there. Since that time, the beginning of Turkish rule over Bosnia is counted.

The picturesque town stretching along the Lasva River attracted the attention of the Turks. Its location, at the intersection of all routes from east to west, was strategically advantageous. And the old fortress on the hill turned out to be suitable for the residence of the vizier. So for two centuries Travnik became the capital of the Ottoman viziers. During the Ottoman period, many beautiful buildings were built in the city, not only of a religious nature. Due to this, at that time Travnik was called the most eastern of European cities and even European Istanbul.

Today, mosques in the city harmoniously coexist with churches and preserved buildings from the Ottoman era. In combination with the remaining buildings of the independent medieval kingdom, they turn Travnik into a place of living history, where all the advantages of modernity could not erase the dignity of antiquity.
