Tourists visiting Abkhazia certainly make an excursion to the Sukhum monkey nursery, known throughout the former Soviet Union, especially with the onset of the era of space flights. The Sukhumi monkey nursery will soon celebrate the centenary of its foundation. It was created in the 20s of the XX century specifically for conducting medical research experiments on monkeys, moreover, in territories far from their natural habitats. In connection with the expansion of the scope of research work in 1957, the biomedical station was transformed into a research institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. Sukhumi was chosen because of its humid subtropical climate, suitable for keeping most of the species composition of primates outdoors, the possibility of growing here the plant food familiar to them.

The initiator of the creation of the nursery was the People's Commissar of Health N.A. Semashko. For the organization of the nursery, the building of the former dacha of Professor Ostroumov on Mount Trapezia was originally chosen, where the first four monkeys were delivered in 1927, the rest from a batch of fifteen hundred individuals died on the way from Guinea. In subsequent years, various types of monkeys, such as hamadryas, baboons, anubis, rhesus monkeys, Javanese and Japanese monkeys, were able to take root here. Some of them from 1974 to the present day live in a free population in the valley of the Gumista River. Here scientists tested the first vaccines, tested the effect of antibiotics and drugs. Twelve pets of the Sukhumi kennel have been in space.
