Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1991. The main impetus for the creation of the museum was the idea to concentrate and open to people contemporary art and its most diverse areas. The opening of the museum was facilitated by the municipality of Roskilde, which made the existence of such a cultural institution possible. A few years later, in 1994, the state approved the museum, making it national.

Today the museum deals with contemporary information, both Danish and international, including sound recordings, videos, and Internet art. Exhibitions are held both inside the museum and outside its walls. Among other events, the museum hosts the ACTS performing arts festival every two years.

The museum conducts research in the field of contemporary art, serves as a storage site for works of modern art, presenting the latest trends, and also contains collections dedicated to Danish and international art. Over the past 25 years, the collections have significantly enriched, and their expansion continues to this day. The Museum considers it a priority to organize educational excursions for schoolchildren and students.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is an independent institution funded by government grants and private investments. Now the museum occupies the building of the royal residence of the city of Roskilde. It was built in 1733 by order of King Christian VI, and the chief architect was Laurits de Thura.
