Photo and description

The Market Square is located in the very center of Rzeszow, it is a favorite place for the townspeople. The square is home to shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous cultural events and city festivals.

In the 14th century, Rzeszow was located on the path of several trade routes. To enhance the economic growth of the city, Rzeszow received the right to wholesale storage of various goods. In the 17th century, the city achieved benefits for the storage of wine and fish. There was a need to create a limited space for storing products. Due to lack of space, it was decided to build underground storage facilities of bricks up to 10 meters deep. In the dungeons, corridors and rooms were created, resulting in a whole underground labyrinth. Low wooden buildings were built in the market square, in which the shops of artisans were located. Some of the brick cellars have survived to this day, and is a popular tourist attraction in Rzeszow.

After a strong fire in 1842, new buildings were built on the market square, where various shops were opened: jewelry, furniture, grocery, and ateliers. The market square developed until the rapid construction of the New Town, a young district of Rzeszow, began.

After the end of World War II, the market square, like the entire center of Rzeszow, was in a deplorable state. The communist authorities began the reconstruction and strengthening of the surviving underground storage facilities. Currently, there is an underground tourist route in the city, which was developed by the Local Lore City Museum.
